IP Rating Explained

Ingress Protection Rating means entry protection. In today’s post, we will discuss IP Rating. All the information here will be fun, interesting, and knowledgeable.
We have heard many names about IP Rating. Such as-IP67, IP68,IPX8, IP53, ATM,5ATM,etc. Each of these is discussed in the simple language below. Ip full form (Ingress Protection) Normally we hear or use this word on mobile. Expensive mobiles have an IP rating. For example, Samsung S21 IP68 certified, iPhone 12 Pro Max IP68 certified. I hear IPX8 on some phones. This means that even if the phones get into the water, there will be no problem. The numbers associated with this IP word are very important. Let’s look at an example…

Here number 6 is for resistance to solid objects and number 7 is for resistance to liquids. This means that the phone’s ability to resist dust or liquids (water) is compared to these numbers. The higher the number the more protection.

What are solid protection levels?

These protections are calculated in different ways. For example, in the case of solid protection, i.e. in the case of dust, it is calculated from 1 to 6. And in the case of liquid protection or water, it is calculated from 1 to 8.
When we say IP53, it means 5 levers of solid protection and 3levels of liquid protection. 1 to 6 solid protection and 1 to 8 liquid protection are all discussed below.

Solid Protection:

IP1 will be discussed first,
Here, 1 is the first level of solid protection. Large solid objects cannot penetrate IP1. Cannot penetrate more than 50 mm. if it is smaller than this, it will penetrate.
IP2 will be discussed in the second number,
Here, 2 is the second level of solid protection. solid objects larger than 12 millimeters cannot enter through IP2. if smaller than 12 millimeters, this protection will be penetrated.
IP3 will be discussed in the third number
Here, 3 is the third level of solid protection. Solid objects larger than 2.5 millimeters cannot enter through IP2. if smaller than 2.5 millimeters, this protection can be penetrated.
IP4 will be discussed the fourth number,
Here, 4 is the fourth level of solid protection. Solid objects larger than 1 millimeter cannot enter through IP2. If smaller than 1 millimeter, this protection will be penetrated.
IP5 will be discussed in the fifth number,
Here, 5 is the fifth level of solid protection. Dust will not be able to enter through it. This is fully dust protected but not dustproof. So something can’t get through it completely. This does not mean that not a single drop will go inside_.
Number six I will discuss IP6
Here, 6 is the sixth level of solid protection. This is the highest level of solid protection.
With this, dust will not be able to enter in any way.
This is fully dust-protected and proof.

In addition to these, you will notice IPX8, IPX7, etc.
Here X means no solid protection. With this, dust can easily enter through IPX8, IPX7. Then we will discuss liquid protection levels 

What are liquid protection levels?

When a liquid cannot enter through protection, it is called liquid protection. And these protections are divided into different parts according to power.
These parts are called liquid protection levels

Liquid protection :

IP61 will be discussed first,
Here 1 is the protection level of liquid protection. IP61 is not protected against vertically falling water drop, if the water coming from another side then there was a problem.
The second number is IP62,
Here 2 is the protection level of liquid protection. This means that if you spray any liquid at a 15-degree angle, you will not be able to penetrate the protection, this IP62 was protected against the direct spray of liquid up to a 15-degree vertical angle. But if the water comes around loudly, there will be a problem.
The third number is IP63,
Here 3 is the protection level of liquid protection. This means that if you spray water at a 60-degree angle, it will not penetrate the protection. This IP63 was protected against the direct spray of liquid up to 60 degrees fo vertical angle.
the fourth number is IP64,
Here 4 is the protection level of liquid protection. this means that water cannot penetrate Dust Protection from any direction. This IP64 was protected against the direct spray of liquid up to 360 degrees of vertical angle.
Number five is IP65,
Here 5 is the protection level of liquid protection. This means not only water but there will also be no harm if even a little water pressure comes with the water. Spray can come from any direction.
number six is IP66,
Here 6 is the protection level of liquid protection. IP66 is more powerful protection than all previous levels. And IP66 protected against powerfull jets of water. there is no problem with spray and pressure from 360 degrees.
Seventh is IP67,
Here 7 is the protection level of liquid protection. This is a very important level. Here you can put your phone in full water. However, there are some conditions, such as,

  • ¬†1) can keep underwater for up to 30 minutes.
  • 2) can penetrate deep into the water up to 1 meter or 15 cm. if you put it in water for 2-3 hours, the phone will have problems.

Number eight is IP68:
Here 8 is the protection level of liquid protection. This is the highest level of liquid protection.
Here you can keep your phone in the water for a long time. it can also withstand water pressure. 2-5 days but no problem. IP68 means 6 levels of solid protection and 8 levels of liquid protection is the highest protection.

So far, research has shown that there is no proof of IP rating. Nowhere is it said that as long as it is kept in the water there will be no problem.

It also does not say how much water you can take. it is also said that there will be no problem if it is kept in water for a long time. It also does not say how much water pressure it can take. all the freshwater discussed here has been tested. this IP rating does not work in sea saltwater. Because these people contain a lot of chemicals. Due to which IP protection can be bad.
The power of IP rating will continue to decrease every time you put your phone in the water.

What is ATM?

ATM(atmosphere pressures) These are used in smartwatches. ATM is much older than IP Rating.
1 ATM: these means do not expose it to water
3 ATM: this protection protects the watch from water droplets.
5 ATM: If you have this protection, there is no problem if the smartwatch is submerged in water for a while. but it cannot be submerged for long.
10 ATM: if you swim in the middle of the sea, it will not be a problem. It can withstand water pressure. This type of watch is used by swimmers.
20 ATM: where water pressure is very high, those who use jet use this type of watch
